About 1st Kildwick and Farnhill Scouts

1st Kildwick & Farnhill Scout Group was formed in 1940 at the Manse in Farnhill. Since then it has moved geographically further and further from its birth place, for the first ten years or so it remained on the north side of the Aire in its home village. In 1950 came the first move to the wooden hut in Station Road, Crosshills. In 1961, the second move took the Group out of sight of Kildwick & Farnhill altogether to the middle of Crosshills at The Old Liberal Club, Milligan Fields (the site now of the Co- op). Then came the re development of that part of Crosshills where stood the new HQ. A deal was made and the Council bought Milligan Fields for demolition in 1972. At that time the Group was in a position to buy the Co – op in Glusburn. So onwards the Group marched to set up shop in its present home, it has been a far trek, both in years and distance from the Kildwick Parish Rooms in 1940 to the present day in Glusburn.

The first Gang Show was performed in 1941 and was held at various locations over the first forty or so years then it moved to Glusburn Institute where it has been staged ever since. In 2013 it was recognized by the Scout Association as being the longest running group Gang Show in the Country. Our 80th Anniversary Gang Show was held in 2023. Eighty years of songs, laughter, dance and unstoppable entertainment from all our Beavers, Cubs Scouts & Leaders. Each year the incredible enthusiasm and commitment truly captures our great Scouting spirit of togetherness.

We are a thriving Group supporting 80 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts through their Scouting journey. Throughout the year all members gain “skills for life” through fun and adventure by taking part in progressive training to help them gain awards. Our village community of Glusburn and the surrounding area is used for local walks, games/challenges, tent pitching, pioneering, fire lighting skills and navigation work. Opportunities are also given for members to take part in Beaver Sleepovers, Cub/ Scout Activity Weekends and our annual Scout Summer Camp.
